I'm a proud member of Authors Supporting Intellectual Freedom (AS IF!)
In this, I'm joined by some of the finest writers for young people. Here's our mission statement:
AS IF! (Authors Supporting Intellectual Freedom) champions those who stand against censorship, especially of books for and about teens.
Here are some useful links on the subject of fighting for intellectual freedom:
The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) has an excellent toolkit for fighting book censorship in schools
The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) has the Handbook for Banned Books Week
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has an anti-censorship center
The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) has a fighting censorship checklist. Although this is intended for student journalists, it's got some very useful strategy ideas.
You can always trust the "radical militant librarians" (love them!) over at the ALA to fight for our right to read what we want. There are lots of good articles in their site (search for "intellectual freedom" - they've got an office devoted to it) but here's one about School Library Media Centers and Intellectual Freedom
